Broncos mid-season slump means only one thing

By Chase Christensen Twelve rounds have come and gone in the 2026 NRL season. Our pre-season predictions have almost been perfectly on point, as we selected the Dragons to take home the dreaded ‘Wooden Spoon’ and the Warriors to be the most improved and dark horse of the competition. There was one prediction that is looking quite shaky now though, as our predicted grand final winner, the Brisbane Broncos, have slumped to a third straight loss, making their record five wins a

Gardening for wildlife on the edge: Creating butterfly and bird havens in a changing Island landscape

Bribie Island and its surrounding suburbs sit at a fascinating crossroads — where suburban backyards meet the edge of coastal national park, wetlands and dunes. With more than 340 bird species recorded in the area and a rich array of butterflies, our gardens represent a massive opportunity for conservation. Yet many yards remain ‘green deserts’ of lawns and exotic plants that offer little to local wildlife. BIEPA’s Backyard Biodiversity project highlights this perfectly: t

Fishing Report: Late April to Mid-May 2026 – Bribie Island & Pumicestone Passage

G’day all, hope your month of fishing has been a cracker. Having a look around the area and the reports coming through, here’s my general overall take on how things have been fishing for land-based anglers in the Bribie Island and Pumicestone Passage channels and flats from the end of April through to mid-May. The changeover from autumn into the cooler months is definitely underway. Water temperatures have dropped noticeably and we’ve had some unsettled weather with variab

Fishing with Paul

Headed out fishing at 4am on May 5, straight after the full moon. The moon was perfect, tide was good and with the stars aligned all things pointed to another good day. As the swell was 2.5-3m we headed straight to the cape – I wasn’t crossing the wild banks in that! Arrived at Comby Point right on first light after easily making it through the breakers. And that my friends is where the prefect day ended. The cape greeted us with a very sloppy 3m of S/E swell and 10 knots o

Labor’s budget exposes a government built on lies

In his powerful Paul Murray Live segment on Sky News, Paul Murray cut through the political spin with a forensic, evidence-heavy takedown of the Albanese Labor government’s latest budget. As someone fed up with the endless broken promises, I fully back Murray’s unsparing verdict: this isn’t just policy failure - it’s a government defined by serial deception and everyday Australians are the ones suffering. Murray didn’t hold back. He reminded viewers of Anthony Albanese’s own

Men charged following violent robbery in Caboolture

Two men have been charged with attempted murder after a robbery with violence incident at a licenced premise on Aerodrome Road in Caboolture on Saturday May 9. A group of three people allegedly stole money from a 31-year-old man at the location at about 10.30pm. The man confronted the group at a carpark a short time later, before he was assaulted and sustained a stab wound to his neck. The offenders allegedly fled the scene on foot prior to police arriving on scene. Offic

The battleline: who wins and who loses in the latest budget

By Sheree Hoddinett Every year we wait with bated breath to see the outcome of the federal government budget. It’s not so much to see what we might actually receive, but more a case of what we will likely miss out on. Australians struggling with rising grocery bills, soaring rents and mortgage pressure may have been handed some targeted relief, but economists warn many households may still feel little immediate financial relief as inflation continues to bite. Treasurer

Adult Crime, Adult Time numbers are in

By Sheree Hoddinett It’s still very much early days, but it seems the introduction of Adult Crime, Adult Time in Queensland is starting to show some positive signs. The recently released annual Queensland Government Statistician’s Office Crime Report for 2024–25 shows overall crime fell by 1.2% compared to the previous financial year. The data captures the first six months since the introduction of the tougher sentencing laws. According to the report, break-ins, robberies

Next step in the second bridge process

By Sheree Hoddinett They say good things come to those who wait and this definitely applies in the case of the long-awaited second Bribie bridge. The Department of Transport and Main Roads website has the current status listed as: The project has now progressed into the detailed design phase. The Queensland Government is undertaking a series of investigations and surveys to inform the detailed design of the new bridge. These activities include hydrological and marin

Contract awarded for Bribie On Demand Transport trial

The use of On Demand Transport on Bribie Island is getting even closer with Caboolture Bus Lines recently awarded the contract for a three-year trial. The trial is scheduled to start in late 2026 and will follow the same operating model as existing Translink ODT services on the Gold Coast, Hervey Bay and Toowoomba. ODT is a flexible public transport option connecting people with essential services such as local healthcare providers, employment opportunities, shopping p

New voices join Metro North Health Board

By Sheree Hoddinett As part of a state-wide overhaul aimed at strengthening frontline input into hospital decision-making, Metro North Health has welcomed four new members to its hospital and health service board. The appointments form part of a broader initiative by the Crisafulli Government, which has seen 91 positions filled across 16 hospital and health boards throughout Queensland. Of these, 50 are new appointments and 41 are reappointments, bringing together expertis

Reeling in connection

By Sheree Hoddinett Hooked on more than just fishing, a fast-growing grassroots movement is transforming time on the water into a powerful force for mental health, connection and community across the Pumicestone Passage and beyond. Pumicestone Passage Pirates, founded in early 2024, has quickly grown from a small Facebook group into a thriving, volunteer-led movement focused on wellbeing, suicide prevention and environmental care across the Pumicestone Passage, Sunshine Coas

Bribie Island: The silver bullet of Southeast Queensland’s property market – One of the last bridge connected beachside Islands

As Southeast Queensland grapples with soaring housing demand, tightening affordability in Brisbane and a wave of retirees seeking lifestyle upgrades, Bribie Island stands out as the region’s silver bullet. One of the last true beachside Islands directly linked to the mainland by bridge, it offers a rare blend of relaxed coastal living, strong capital growth potential and everyday convenience that ferry-dependent Islands simply can’t match. The property market on Bribie Isl

Bribie Island Fishing update: Autumn action with whiting and school mackerel

As we head through April, southeast Queensland is firmly in the autumn transition. Cooler nights, persistent southeasterly winds and occasional showers have created variable conditions around Bribie Island and northern Moreton Bay. While strong winds have limited some outings, protected inshore areas, passages and clearer bay waters are delivering solid results. Prawn runs remain strong (especially from the saltworks to Nudgee and Tingalpa Creek), whiting have shifted eastwar

Brighten your Bribie garden this winter

Flowering plants to sow and plant now As autumn settles over Bribie Island and the surrounding Moreton Bay region, the days cool gently, gardeners know it's prime time to plan for winter cheer. Our mild coastal winters - with daytime temperatures often staying in the low to mid-20s and only rare light frosts - create ideal conditions for a spectacular display of flowers that will bloom from late autumn right through to spring. April and May are the perfect months to pla
