On Saturday evening, 2nd November, at the Bribie Island golf club, Woorim, Hairdressers with Hearts held a fundraising Masquerade Ball to raise money to assist in the attacking of Domestic Violence (DV). Almost $5000 was raised towards it’s operations.
Hairdressers with Hearts (HwH) founder, Sonia Colvin, is leading the new drive against DV in our community. She has, as do other hairdressers have a very close relationship with their clients. Clients open up about almost everything personal in their lives to their hairdressers, Sonia said.
Sonia said that during a hairdressing apprenticeship DV awareness should be a vital part so that DV can be spotted early and the client can be given the right assistance to move forward. Sonia has assisted 136 victims of DV since she became accredited almost two years ago and she said that there are over 50,000 hairdressers throughout Australia that have the potential to do exactly the same.
Attending the evening were Lisa Curry, Federal member for Longman, Terry Young, Labor Minister for Prevention of Domestic and Family Violence, Di Farmer, Member for Pumicstone, Simone Wilson and local councillor Brooke Savige.
The Honourable Di Farmer, Minister for Child Safety, Youth and Women and Minister for the Prevention of Domestic and Family Violence said that this is the kind of initiative that the government is so eager to see across the community and from businesses and she said the starting point to any DV situation, is to just say to the person that you think may be a victim, these three words, “ARE YOU OK”. Mr. Young said that the government can not sit back and let this violence continue at the rate that it is and it is unclear at the moment what State or Federal government is doing to initiate changes to the apprenticeship training.
During the evening a beautiful song was sung by Shele Mutti (Shele D) and it was also written by Shele D, the guests all stopped to listen to the song called “She Was” especially for HwH, the main entertainment was provided by the fantastic group “Sex and Chocolates,” who played and sung every kind of music that was liked by all in attendance. Over 200 people attended in all different sorts of costumes and masks.
