Bringing sustainable fashion to the ladies of Bribie

By Sheree Hoddinett

Ladies, is it time to spoil yourself with a new outfit? That doesn’t mean it’s time to race to the shops. Instead you can join the fun and social morning at the Mojo Mama Women’s Sustainable Seconds Fashion Market and maybe score yourself a fashionable bargain in the process.

As the dynamic duo behind Mojo Mama, Miranda Murray and Eileen Tiller have already put together a number of successful events including twilight markets and social brunches, along with other events for mums. The idea for the fashion morning came about all thanks to Eileen and her own wardrobe needing a reshuffle.

“So, I have a love for clothes. If I'm out, I'm always buying clothes and I’ll be honest, I've got too many clothes,” Eileen said. “But, having so many clothes doesn't necessarily mean I've always got something to wear. Because then I go into the wardrobe and something doesn't fit right or doesn't look right. You know, my body's changed since having my babies.

“So I have many dresses and outfits in this wardrobe that are just sitting there and not being worn. And I was getting overwhelmed one day because there was just so much in front of me. I thought I need to just sell it all and then I thought surely other mums feel like this too, so why don't we have a day where women can come together and either sell their clothing or come looking for new clothing for themselves. But the good news is, it’s sustainable, so then we don't feel so guilty about going out and buying new things.”

The two ladies put their heads together and discovered there were already some sustainable fashion markets happening around Brisbane, so why not bring the idea to Bribie?

“Everyone we spoke to liked the idea and thought it would be fun, so we thought let’s give it a go,” Miranda said. “Also the clothes will be cheaper because they are second-hand, but women love that and we all love a bargain, it just makes sense to try it out.

“I know in my wardrobe; I’ve got things with tags on it still. Particularly if you’re shopping online and you like the look of something, but once you get it and put it on, it doesn’t come across how you pictured it would or you just don’t feel confident wearing it.

“So we thought well let's take the guilt out of those things that hang in the wardrobe that were either worn once or not at all and give them a new home, see them go to the place you know they will be worn and loved.”

As well as showcasing a range of clothing and other goods, the event will also have Step Up Play, a local soft play business coming along to help with entertaining the kids.

“They’re going to have an area, whether you're a shopper or whether you're a vendor, you can come along and have somewhere for the kids to play while you do your thing,” Eileen said. “So, we're going to call it a shop and drop corner. But the best thing about it is the two ladies that run Step Up, they're actually dance teachers as well, so they're completely qualified. They have their blue cards, so they can actually mind the kids while you enjoy a bit of quiet shopping time.”

A small entry fee of $2 will be charged on the day, with all those fees being donated to The Pink Elephants Support Network, who support couples and families with early pregnancy loss. Having both been on long IVF journeys and the experience of early pregnancy loss, both Miranda and Eileen couldn’t think of a better cause to put their support behind.

“We're hoping that we can make a big difference,” Miranda said. “Since we started Mojo Mama and both openly share what we have been through, there's been so many women who come to the events, whether they've been to the business things or the social events, who tell us they have been through IVF too.

“It's just something that's close to our hearts and we want women to not feel like they can't tell anyone these things.”

Although the day is mostly about pre-loved clothing, the market will also feature:

  • Kids clothing and toys

  • Jewellery

  • Shoes, bags and other accessories

  • Handmade goods including hair accessories, homewares, candles and more.

“Even if people aren’t wanting to specifically buy anything, just come out for the experience,” Eileen said. “We want mums and women to get together and mingle. We want it to be a really fun experience for women on Bribie and surrounds to come together and just something for them to do together.”

There will also be live music, with local musician Lizzi May busking on the day. Cash is very much encouraged, so grab your friends and get ready to have a good time!

The Mojo Mama Women’s Sustainable Seconds Fashion Market is on Saturday November 18 from 9am-12 noon in the auditorium at the Bribie Island RSL. For further information, please visit mojomama.com.au or follow mojomamaeventsbribie on Facebook and Instagram.
