CCTV SURVEILLANCE & SECURITY

Personal safety and the security of your home and possessions have never been more important. In a bygone era, a sturdy door lock and a watchful neighbour was all that was needed to safeguard your property during your absence and it was rare for thieves to target a property when the occupants were at home. You probably even left a key under a pot-plant near the front door just in case a friend or relative needed access while you were away. Sadly those days are long gone.

Today’s criminals are far more brazen and determined, and they have an extensive arsenal of tools at their disposal to help facilitate a quick and undetected break-in. Australia has the 7th highest rate of burglaries in the world, with over 400,000 Australian homes subjected to break-in events in a 12-month period. Over 70% of these break-ins result in the theft of belongings and, alarmingly, in nearly 12% of cases the victim experiences a face-to-face confrontation with the perpetrator.

So what can be done to mitigate this problem? Fortunately there are some effective counter-measures available, one of which is the installation of CCTV surveillance cameras and recording devices. These systems are becoming more and more commonplace and are proven to be very effective as both a deterrent and as a means of identifying and tracing the offenders involved. There is a plethora of CCTV cameras, recorders, and associated equipment on the market available from a vast number of suppliers. This can make it very difficult for the average consumer to make the right choice to suit their needs and budget. Unless you are well versed with the technologies involved, seek advice from a reliable, trustworthy supplier.

Planning is paramount for a successful system installation. Camera type and placement is extremely important to achieve the coverage area and resolution required. Consider all points of possible entry to the premises including rear and side access. If your property adjoins a reserve or is situated on a water canal, make provision for adequate camera coverage of these areas. Consider using remotely located solar powered cameras if required. In some cases there may be need for internal cameras as well as external. Don’t forget to prominently display warning signs that state the property is under 24/7 CCTV surveillance. After all, it is preferable to deter the villain from entering the premises in the first place rather than to catch them in the act of the break-in. Most criminals would prefer an easy job with the least chance of being caught. Speak to your preferred supplier to convey your requirements and expectations and seek their advice on how best to achieve them. Simply request a no obligation free site appraisal. Remember, always ensure to check out their credentials including their security equipment installer’s license before you engage their services and most important, never allow them to enter your premises without showing suitable ID and license details.

The cost of these systems can vary widely from several hundred to many thousands of dollars, depending on the size and vulnerability of the premises, personal circumstance of the occupant, desired functionality, etc. It is important to remember that the cheapest is not always the best choice so choose the system that is the best value for money. Most home and contents insurance companies offer a premium discount if suitable CCTV equipment is installed so contact your insurance company for details. While CCTV cannot guarantee your home will not be targeted by thieves, it can be a very affordable and worthwhile investment that helps protect your property and provides peace of mind.
