Colin and Mavis met at an old-time dance in early 1961, marrying at ‘Queen of Peace’ Catholic Church Woody Point on December 1, 1962.
They first lived in Kallangur where Colin built their first house making all the rock faced bricks by hand and digging the foundations by hand, which was extremely hard work for a clerical worker. The whole project took three years to complete.
After saving some money Colin went on to build an 18-foot Trailer Sailer which took 2 years to complete. Meanwhile their family grew to 3 girls and 1 boy and twin baby girls who were sadly deceased.
In 1979 with a growing family, they decided to purchase a parcel of land from Mavis’s parents at Narangba, constructing a kit home which became their family home for a very happy 40 years.
They formed a small dance band entertaining at many aged care and respite centres. Throughout the years to make ends meet, Colin and Mavis joined Bessemer cookware party plan, Hobbytex and Avon. Mavis nursed at an RSL home for 10 years with Colin driving school and shopper buses. Colin’s health issues eventually forced his retirement.
Over the years they have enjoyed many camping and caravan trips, including 5 overseas cruises.
They continued with their love of old-time dancing, adding square dancing to their repertoire in 2004, continuing to dance until Colin became too unsteady on his feet. Now Colin takes Mavis along so she can still enjoy the exercise.
Eventually the property at Narangba became too much to manage. In 2021 they decided to find something smaller, acquiring a quarter acre block with a lovely home in Donnybrook, keeping Mavis busy with her love of gardening and Colin in his shed with his wood turning.
They don’t get to use their lovely boat as much as they would like and are hoping to rectify this in the near future. Since moving to Donnybrook they have joined the local garden club and also regularly enjoy picnics along the beautiful foreshore.
They are best mates who have always enjoyed each other’s company. How lucky they are!
They will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary with their 4 children, 5 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren along a few of their friends and relatives.
Staff from ‘The Local’ would also like to congratulate Mavis and Colin for this incredible achievement.
