Fishing Report

Hi readers of ‘the LOCAL’ newspaper

Spring is now here! As the nights begin to warm and the days get longer anglers will start to dust off their beach fishing gear for some fun and productive fishing. Main species like whiting, bream, flathead and dart are found locally around Bribie’s surf beaches. Fishing the surf, standing on the beach listening to the waves in the early morning or late afternoon with a rod in a rod holder has an appeal like no other and is truly one of the greatest ways to unwind.

With those four main species to target, the following bait is probably your best option. To catch whiting, dart and bream we like to use bloodworms, yabbies and pippies. Hardy heads, herring and pilchards are preferred for flathead.

Other species that are regularly caught from the beach include anything from tailor, mackerel through to tun. Throwing metal slugs, floating pillies or live baits work well for these larger fish.

Rods and reels don’t have to be expensive. Rods vary from 9ft through to 12ft in length. ‘Alvey’ reels are the best choice for use in the surf and for ease of maintenance. You can get them wet and sandy, just remember to hose them off when you get home.

Burley are best for bringing the fish to you. Let them float around your feet in the wash allowing the waves to do the rest for you.

Surf fishing is a lot of fun, it is simple and it is a nice way to get your fishing fix!

With a lot of weed in the passage, ocean beaches and Sandstone Point have been more productive. Think September, think summer whiting. So far anglers have been bagging out and catching good quality fish with Red Beach being the hotspot. Plenty of tailor still around with floating pillies and trolling the best method. There have been better quality fish in and around Cook’s Rocks.

Enjoy fishing and remember to catch only what you need.
