Greetings readers of ‘the LOCAL’ newspaper,
Hi everyone, this is Danny and Michelle from Island Fishing Supplies, Banksia Beach and Bellara! We are excited to announce we have opened another shop at Marine Parade Bellara.
WHITE PATCH
Situated towards the northern end on live bloodworms anglers are catching bream and grassy sweetlip.
BANKSIA BEACH
Very nice snapper at the ripples on the drift with soft plastics, especially with the Berkley Gulp 3-inch scented shrimp. There are also some very nice flathead.
SANDSTONE POINT
Still plenty of summer whiting on the flats using yabbies and bloodworms as bait. Excellent catches of flathead in the same areas.
SKIRMISH POINT
A few nice summer whiting at Skirmish Point early in the mornings on the incoming tide. The mackerel are still there. A great way to catch them is by floating pilchards or using metal slugs.
SQUID AND CUTTLEFISH
The coming months will start to see an increase in these species. They are fun to catch, excellent to eat and make a prime bait for a lot of varieties of fish. As the water clarity starts to clear around the inshore areas, tiger and arrow squid will be in abundance. They usually start to move as the water clears up heading into winter.
HOW TO CATCH
You want nice clear water around structure like weed beds, rocks, jetties and pontoons. I find an hour or two either side of high tide is the best time. Even if you cannot see them, they can often be camouflaged and hiding right under your nose, so it is important to cover plenty of ground. A long cast around structures and allowing your jig to slowly sink to the bottom. By doing a few sharp lifts with the rod tip to get the jig off the bottom then allowing it to sink again. More often than not the squid will strike the jig on the pause.
GEARING UP
When it comes to gearing up for squid, light spinning rods and reels are the preferred option, loaded with light braided line such as Platypus P8 or Platinum Plus Mono 10lb and 8-10lb Fluro Carbon Leader. A 20-30 size reel with a nice smooth drag. So there you go, squid season is just around the corner, get your gear ready and go get yourself some calamari rings for dinner.
Enjoy your fishing and remember to only catch what you need!
