Fishing report

Greetings readers of ‘the LOCAL’ newspaper.

Hi everyone, Danny and Michelle from Island Fishing Supplies, Banksia Beach and Bellara!

RED BEACH TO WOORIM

Still plenty of summer whiting on the incoming tide. The odd queen fish and long tail tuna caught on metal slugs.

BRIBIE BRIDGE

Some very nice snapper and gold spot cod around the pylons, caught on soft vibes.

NINGI CREEK

The mouth of Ningi Creek has been fishing well for bream and grunter bream, prawns have been the best bait.

WHITE PATCH

The Flats have been very productive for whiting and bloodworms have been the best bait. Also a few flatheads on the soft plastics. Gallaghers Gutter is producing some nice snapper and grunter bream and again fresh prawns have been working well.

JACKIN JACKS

We are very lucky here at Bribie, fortunately we have one of the best mangrove jack fisheries in Australia. There is an endless maze of waterways loaded with structure to hide under and around for these fish. They are spoilt for choice for ambush spots. Now that it is starting to warm up it is the perfect time to start chasing jacks.

BEST BAITS FOR JACKS

Live baits, poddy mullet, silver biddies, bony bream, herring, gar, whiting, pike, yakkas and slimeys.

DEAD BAITS

Any of those live baits will work well, whole fillets and heads also work. Sometimes, bream will pick at these as opposed to whole fish.

ARTIFICAL LURES – PLASTICS

Plastics are an ideal way to target these fish around bridges, rock walls, pillars, pylons, pontoons, rock bars, mangrove lines and jetties. Having a good variety of different shapes, sizes and tails will help and try to match the hatch.

COLOURS

Opening night, new penny, red bone, pearl, Houdini and mood ring all work and again remember match the hatch.

HARD BODIES

Are deadly on jacks, most 60mm-200mm hard bodies work well. Bib size depends on depth and current. It must have a good shake or shimmy to it. I really like the Atomic Slim Twitcher range and the larger Atomic Shiners.

COLOURS

Silver wolf, muddy prawn, silver glitter and bleeding mullet.

SURFACE LURES

They love surface lures especially around dusk and dawn. Suga pens, splash prawns, stick baits and poppers all work. The colour is not so important, it is the action that gets them. 50mm-200mm are best for jacks.

So, there you go a few tips for JACKIN JACKS!

Make the most of our wonderful spring days and only take what you need.

Enjoy your fishing!

Danny and Michelle
