Gardening

Hi Gardeners

Hope this newsletter finds you gearing up for Spring.

Is the grass always greener on the other side of the fence? It’s coming up to a favourite time of the year – looking after our lawns. So let the grass do its job!

GRASSES

Our turf varieties and specifications on two (2) of our most popular grasses are listed below for your information.

GREEN COUCH

This variety has a fine to medium texture and displays a mid-green colour with low to medium density. It is a tough grass which stays green provided you give it enough water and will repair as the runners grow quickly. Couch loves full sun, not thriving in shaded areas.

SIR WALTER (Winter Active Low Thatch Environmentally Responsible)

Born and breed in Australia the above are the desirable traits of this grass. It requires minimum water, chemical and fertilizer usage, growing in as little as 2 to 3 hours sunlight per day. It is extremely hardy and can be mowed at a variety of heights to suit the situation.

This turf comes in slabs, sized 1200mm x 600mm of which three (3) slabs equal two (2) square metres. The purchase of a product called launcher is placed on the ground before laying the turf, providing water crystals and fertiliser to help in the growth of the turf.

Approximately 6 – 8 weeks after the turf has been laid, lift the turf up with your hand, if it stays firm, it means that it has caught, and you can mow at the top mower height.

We also have a large range of lawn seed available.

New to this group is BLUE COUCH SEED

Blue Couch is beautiful in appearance and blue green in colour, when fertilized. Needing at least six (6) hours sunlight per day, it has a soft texture, but is not shade tolerant.

To have the greenest grass in the street you should apply Dolomite to your lawn in the 3rd week of August, and every two (2) years thereafter.

However, being good old Bribie soil, acidic and sandy – first, if not done before, purchase a wetting agent. Lightly water your grass and then water in the wetting agent. A couple of hours later apply the Dolomite, which sweetens the soil, which grass prefers. Ten (10) days later fertilise your lawn. Grass should then be fertilised every eight (8) weeks, which is early Spring, late Spring, Summer, and Autumn. Wait at least 48 hours before mowing.

Hello to a nice lawn.

POT POURRI

Visually lovely and magnificently perfumed Pot Pourri is a collection of flowers, herbs, precious oils and fixatives. A fixative is usually ‘powdered orris root’. It is the perfect time to pick and dry, roses and lavender which should keep their colour and fragrance.

Your Pot Pourri should be refreshed once a month by adding four to six drops of the appropriate perfumed oil. Importantly, use appropriately formulated oils as incorrect oils may damage the fragrance, composition and character of your Pot Pourri. One drop of perfumed oil is equivalent to the fragrance of one bunch of freshly picked flowers or herbs. A couple of other ways to use your perfumed oils can be: -

  • A drop or two in a warm relaxing bath.

  • Add perfumed oils to cotton balls and place in wardrobes and drawers.

  • Wipe out your clean bath and basin with a cloth with a few drops of scented oil added.

  • Add to macadamia, olive or almond oil to make the perfect massage oil.

Relax and Happy Gardening
