Happy New Year from Danny and Michelle at Island Fishing Supplies, Banksia Beach and Bellara

With school holidays in full swing, there has been a lot of traffic on the water, however despite this there have been decent reports of good catches around Bribie.

The Pacific Harbour canals have been an excellent place to try fishing, with plenty of nice bream taken from around the pontoons at night on prawns and chicken breast. Also, the soft plastics have produced good mangrove jacks in the same areas.

The mouth of the canals has seen some very good flathead on the incoming tide, with the use of live herring or mullet working best.

The ledge at White Patch has been fishing well for snapper and mulloway. The last hour or so of the runout tide being the best time and floating unweighted pilchards have been the best baits.

Also, at White Patch on the flats, good whiting, flathead and bream on live bloodworms with the incoming tide has been the preferred time.

There is plenty of blue swimmer crabs in the passage at the moment, but make sure you keep your eyes on your pots because there has been plenty of theft recently.

BACK TO BASICS

The simple things in life are often the best and back to basic fishing for whiting, bream and flathead around Bribie can be very rewarding. It is simple, cheap and most of the time you will get a feed of fresh fish. Fishing as light as possible is the best way to catch these species.

Fish are not going to be interested in a bait attached to a rope with a gigantic sinker, make sure your bait looks as natural as possible. Baits I like to use include live yabbies, bloodworms and fresh prawns. Tackle includes a No 4 Longshank hook, swivel and sinker depending on the current, with 6lb-10lb line and a light spin rod.

Bream and whiting caught in the passage on bloodworms.

When looking for an area to fish, if you find the yabby holes you find the fish. I like an incoming tide over the flats, you will be very surprised on how little water you need to catch fish.

A part of going fishing for these species is the process. I love the process just as much as the prize, working out the wind and tide, collecting bait and figuring out a location is all part of fishing.

All the very best to you for 2024.

Danny and Michelle
