Thank you Rotary for a Happy New Year!

New Year’s Eve on Bribie Island was celebrated enthusiastically in the ‘dry’, with both the community and holidaymakers enjoying a family-oriented carnival and fireworks in Brennan and Apex Parks. It was the only ‘dry’ day and night for more than a week.

For several years, no New Year’s Eve public celebrations have been held on the Island and the disappointment felt by our community was strongly expressed. With this in mind the Bribie Island Rotary Club decided, at short notice, to take up the challenge of organising a public event to lift the spirits of residents and visitors by holding a New Year’s Eve carnival.

Despite extensive rain over the holidays and a grim forecast of plenty more to come, the club’s events director Lulu Drew (with great enthusiasm) set about organising a New Year’s Eve carnival, including fireworks, which were financed with local sponsorship.

As Bribie residents well know, the generosity of local businesses is second to none and with just a week to go, Lulu had raised enough funds to successfully facilitate the event. Bribie Island Rotary Club is pleased to recognise all the generous sponsors and thank them sincerely for their support.

The major sponsor was the Bribie Island RSL, whose funding enabled Rotary to present an amazing fireworks display on the evening.

The other generous sponsors were:

  • Bribie Island Community Nursery

  • Bribie Island Bowls Club

  • Councillor Brooke Savige

  • Dossels Engineering

  • Robbie’s Crystal Cauldron

  • The Sinclair family

  • Bribie Ampol

  • First National Real Estate

  • Gateway Bribie Adventures

  • Leading Appliances

  • Remax Bribie Island

  • Bribie Island Signs

  • Andrew Cornett’s Sandstone Point IGA

  • Bribie Island/Ningi Local Ambulance Committee

  • Member for Pumicestone Ali King

  • A special purposes grant from City of Moreton Bay Council.

The community enjoyed musical entertainment, carnival rides and activities, market stalls and many varied food choices, creating a festive atmosphere for all to celebrate. Local shops remained open for the evening and a general feeling of goodwill and wellbeing was evident. An amazing finale of spectacular fireworks at 9pm brought the evening to a close, early enough for families to remain involved, with the public support and thanks proving that this event was very much appreciated.

Thank you for the effort and community spirit of Bribie Island Rotary Club, especially after a year with so much bad news, both locally and around the world. We all hope that Rotary will be supported to do this for more New Year’s Eve events in the future.
