The changing face of Bribie Island

By Alistair Gray

Wow! Seeing the significant building activity taking place on Bribie and the new investment in our community is exciting. Those who have been around the Bribie Island Bowling Club will have noticed the spectacular large white shade covers erected over the bowling greens at the rear of the club and the massive building works that have been taking place at the new satellite hospital. Next door at the Bribie Island State High School, a gigantic new structure is being erected the size of a large school hall or gym which is an upgrade to the roofing over the multipurpose court. Besides these projects, a large new health hub is being built adjacent to the car park at Bribie Central on Fortune Avenue. Who said nothing is happening on Bribie?

Bribie Island Bowling Club –“Itis a fabulous development for the cluband a great attraction for our tournaments. It will be good for our members and the local community,”Bribie Bowls Club Inc. general manager Kevin Birtwistlesaid. The large shade sails cover an area of 3600 sqm covering two synthetic bowling greens, enabling bowls to be played day or night and protectingplayers from the elements, particularly the sun. The new facility is expected to open in the second week of December. There will still be a traditional green open to the elements. The upgrades also include a new car park expected to be completed in January. The project total cost will be just under $3 million dollars and will be completed without any financial helpfrom the government. The Bribie Bowling Club is one of the largest bowling clubs in the state with about 420 members. What a great asset for our community to enjoy.

Satellite Hospital - You will have already noticed the major works that have been taking place around the new satellite hospital, the lines of tradie vehicles around the site with many jobs being created with the project. With the main building works and rear car park completed, the specialist fit out work begins. However, no specific opening date has been announced, but is expected to be sometime around mid-2024.

Besides the fit out work, the detailed work of finalising the health services to be delivered, the specialist human resource planning and delivery in a time of severe medical staffing shortages, cannot be underestimated as challenging. Particularly with balancing the community's high expectations for delivering a wide range of specialist services. This may require a progressive roll-out of services as the satellite hospital manages the community's demands with the immediate availability of specialist health resources to meet those demands.

Bribie Health Hub – Construction of this new medical facility started in June 2023 and will house a GP Clinic and other health medical tenancies. It will have a net leasable area of 1700 sqm. Development and leasing manager for the Cornerstone Group Avril Meiklejohn said the main slab was on track to be poured in November, with practical completion in the second quarter of 2024. The Cornerstone Group has been responsible for constructing and developing integrated health hubs that provide community access to the best of multidisciplinary collaborative and preventative health care. The group operates health hubs in Beerwah, Chermside, Gosford and Penrith, with specialist medical centres in North Lakes and Canberra. This new development can only be seen as excellent news for Bribie locals.
